    Brand ambidexterity and commitment in higher education: an exploratory study

    The study investigates a university’s brand ambidexterity-strategy and its effects on brand image, reputation, and commitment in higher education. A research model integrates the determinants of university-specific brand performance, and proposes that commitment towards a particular university is influenced by: (a) brand ambidexterity, that is, exploratory and exploitative orientations; and (b) student level responses, these being the students’ perceptions with brand image and reputation leading to increased commitment with the university. Findings suggest that when students choose to commit for the study of a postgraduate degree, a variety of factors influence their decision, of which the brand performance and brand image constructs play major roles; interestingly, brand reputation is less important. The framework helps university managers in designing appropriate strategies to influence students’ commitment towards the university to, for example, continue their post-graduate studies. Implications exist for broader brand management and customer management approaches that include up and cross-selling schemes

    Social media connects people in digital spaces, affording opportunities for personal, local, and global communication. For some people with severe communication disabilities secondary to lifelong or acquired health conditions social media is a usual part of everyday communication, and may provide a welcome reprieve from the usual “temporal imperative” that “dominates face-to-face communication”. The expressions possible within social media also enable multi-modal communication using text, pictures, and videos to augment or replace face-to-face interactions, and this may be particularly useful to people who cannot rely on natural speech to communicate. Social media and virtual worlds evoke feelings of both distance and proximity between people who share online spaces, and this is reflected in the current field of research on the use of social media by people with communication disabilities

    Active Temporal Multiplexing of Photons

    Photonic qubits constitute a leading platform to disruptive quantum technologies due to their unique low-noise properties. The cost of the photonic approach is the non-deterministic nature of many of the processes, including single-photon generation, which arises from parametric sources and negligible interaction between photons. Active temporal multiplexing - repeating a generation process in time and rerouting to single modes using an optical switching network - is a promising approach to overcome this challenge and will likely be essential for large-scale applications with greatly reduced resource complexity and system sizes. Requirements include the precise synchronization of a system of low-loss switches, delay lines, fast photon detectors, and feed-forward. Here we demonstrate temporal multiplexing of 8 'bins' from a double-passed heralded photon source and observe an increase in the heralding and heralded photon rates. This system points the way to harnessing temporal multiplexing in quantum technologies, from single-photon sources to large-scale computation.Comment: Minor revision

    Henry Bryceson (1832-1909) organ-builder and early work in the application of electricity to organ actions

    That France was the undisputed leader in the application of electromagnets to the pipe-organ, is confirmed. C.S. Barker was the builder of the first electric organ at Salon, Bouches due Rhone, in 1866, but the honour for the invention must be accorded to Pierre Stein for his prophetic patent of 1852. Albert Peschard's electric action patents of 1862-3 represent a defining moment when electric action became the basis for a reality that was exploited by Barker until 1870. Thereafter, it fell to the Brycesons to continue the development of the Peschard-Barker system, but the challenges proved too much: the early actions were faced with technical challenges, and above all, the inherent conservatism of a traditional trade. The last electric-action organ build by Bryceson Brothers was the instrument for the 1885 Inventions Exhibition in London, at which the firms was awarded a Gold Medal for its electrical developments. Bryceson also built several important instruments along conventional lines during the 1860-1880

    Estimating oceanic primary production using vertical irradiance and chlorophyll profiles from ocean gliders in the North Atlantic

    An autonomous underwater vehicle (Seaglider) has been used to estimate marine primary production (PP) using a combination of irradiance and fluorescence vertical profiles. This method provides estimates for depth-resolved and temporally evolving PP on fine spatial scales in the absence of ship-based calibrations. We describe techniques to correct for known issues associated with long autonomous deployments such as sensor calibration drift and fluorescence quenching. Comparisons were made between the Seaglider, stable isotope (13C), and satellite estimates of PP. The Seaglider-based PP estimates were comparable to both satellite estimates and stable isotope measurements

    3D Printing of Food for People with Swallowing Difficulties

    Dysphagia affects many people worldwide. Modifying foods to standard consistencies, and manual design and assembly of foods for the daily requirements of people with dysphagia is challenging. People with dysphagia may develop a dislike for pureed foods due to the unattractiveness of the appearance of the foods, the lack of variety in daily meals, and the diluted taste of meals. Three-dimensional (3D) food printing is emerging as a method for making foods for people with special mealtime needs. Very few efforts have been made to apply 3D food printing to improving the lives of people with special mealtime needs such as those with dysphagia. This paper presents the design and 3D printing of visually appetizing pureed foods for people with dysphagia with high consistency and repeatability. A tuna fish involving pureed tuna (protein), pureed pumpkin (fruit), and pureed beetroot (vegetable) is designed and then 3D printed. The steps involved in the design of tuna fish, preparation of purees, and printing of tuna fish are described. The obtained results are presented, and the findings of this research work are discussed

    Exploring rationales for branding a university: Should we be seeking to measure branding in UK universities?

    Although branding is now widespread among UK universities, the application of branding principles in the higher education sector is comparatively recent and may be controversial for internal audiences who question its suitability and efficiency. This paper seeks to investigate how and whether the effectiveness of branding activity in the higher education sector should be evaluated and measured, through exploratory interviews with those who often drive it; UK University marketing professionals. Conclusions suggest that university branding is inherently complex and therefore application of commercial approaches may be over simplistic. Whilst marketing professionals discuss challenges they do not necessarily have a consistent view of the objectives of branding activity although all were able to clearly articulate branding objectives for their university, including both qualitative and, to some extent, quantitative metrics. Some measures of the real value of branding activity are therefore suggested but a key debate is perhaps whether the objectives and role of branding in higher education needs to be clarified, and a more consistent view of appropriate metrics reached?     Can person-centred care for people living with dementia be delivered in the acute care setting?

Available from Oxford University Press / British Geriatrics Society via the DOI in this record. The need to improve care for people living with dementia in the hospital setting has long been recognised. Person-centred care has the potential to improve the experience of care for persons living with dementia and their carers, and has been shown to improve the experiences of hospital staff caring for the persons living with dementia, however it remains challenging to deliver in a time- and task-focussed acute care setting. This commentary suggests that to embed person-centred care across the hospital environment, cultural changes are needed at organisational and ward levels. In particular there needs to be: leadership that supports and advocates for workforce capacity to recognise and meet both psychological and physical needs of people living with dementia, promotion of physical environments that support familiarisation and social interactions, an inclusive approach to carers and the development of a culture of sharing knowledge and information across hierarchies and roles.
